Step-by-Step Guide

Troubleshooting your Computer

Do you know that the configuration of your computer can prevent a software program from working properly? While no software is perfect, the recent version of Windows XP coupled with the large amount of spyware, adware, and viruses present on most computers can also contribute to errors that are not inherent to the security software.

Listed below are some common problems and tips on resolving them.

Your Keys

Make sure that the key you use coincides with the key of the volume you are opening.  You can't interchange the keys.

Adobe Reader

When you download the files, they will have the .exe format. Once you unlock them, they should be in .pdf format. If you get the message “No Associated Application”, this means you don’t have Adobe Reader on your computer and the files may turn into .com files which you don’t want.

Since the latest version of Adobe Reader 7.0 came out, there have been a lot of problems with it. It is possible that you may have to uninstall Adobe Reader and then reinstall it from scratch. This is because the most recent updates have corrected some of the issues.

Photoshop

If you have the full version of Photoshop on your computer, this may lead to your reader opening up first and cause problems.

You will need to make sure you disable it because Photoshop becomes the default program whenever you open a .pdf file.

Compatibility Issues

You may have successfully downloaded the program and installed the software with no problems. However, at times, when you try to start the program in Windows XP, it thinks the executable file is something else and you may receive an error message. This could be due to a compatibility issue. If this is the case, then you will need to change the compatibilty.

Change Compatibility

To do so:

  1. Go to Start > Program > Accessorries > Programs Compatibility Wizard
  2. Open Wizard and click on “Next”
  3. Click on “I want to locate the program manually”, and then “Next”
  4. Click on “Browse” and then find the file that you are having trouble opening (in C:Exotic Publishing). Select the file and then click “OK”. Click on “Next”.
  5. Follow the instructions within the wizard
  6. Select the Compatibility Mode as Windows 98/Windows ME

Now open the manual.  It should work fine.

Viruses, Trojans, Adwares and Spywares

Check your computer frequently to ensure it is free of viruses, trojans, adwares, and spywares. These could prevent your download from completing successfully or even damage installation files.

We recommend updating your virus software definitions and then running a full virus system scan. If you don't have a virus scanner, a free one is available from AVG.

To remove adwares and spywares, we recommend Ad-aware a free program from Lavasoft.

Error in the Download Process

One of the most common errors that people receive when they download one of the manuals is "Not a valid Win32 application". This usually occurs on computers using Microsoft Windows XP Operating System.  If you receive this error message, please note: It is not a problem with our software.

Believe it or not, you may not have downloaded the complete file. The most common reasons for this include:  a problem during the download which caused Exotic Publishing’s web server to terminate; you get disconnected from the internet; or your computer is performing other tasks during the download process.  As with all other software programs, it is not a good idea to carry out other tasks while downloading Exotic Publishing material.

So as to avoid downloading a copy of the incomplete version again, click your browser’s “Refresh” button when you revisit the page you initially downloaded the software from. You should also delete your “Cache”. In Internet Explorer, this can be done by clicking on Tools > Internet Options and then “Delete Files”.

Microsoft Operating System

Microsoft seems to have several reasons for this Win32 error, especially on a computer with Windows XP. It could be due to incompatibility with their 64-bit edition. Please, at all times, make sure your computer has the most recent patches from the Microsoft Windows Update website.

We recommend you disable System Restore (Windows Me/XP).

To do so:

  1. Click Start > Programs > Accessories > Windows Explorer
  2. Right-click “My Computer”, and then click “Properties”.
  3. Click the “System Restore” tab.
  4. Check the "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives" check box as shown in this illustration:

Symantec provides detailed instructions (graphics!) on how to disable/enable System Restore.

No Error Message

If Internet Explorer or Firefox does not register that there was an error, the only solution is to delete the file and download it again.
